Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara National Park is only 329 square kilometers (127 square miles), two thirds water, the other third is dry land and home to a spectacular game concentrated in a small area. Of the 329 square kilometers (127 square miles), the lake’s alkaline waters cover approximately 231 square kilometers (89 square miles). Lake Manyara is a shallow freshwater lake in said by Ernest Hemingway to be the “loveliest lake in Africa”.

Lake Manyara area was established as game reserve in 1957 and in 1960 it was elevated to a national park status. It is run by the Tanzania National Parks Authority.

Lake Manyara National Park is located 130 kilometers (80 miles) from Arusha. It is a beautiful park that contains a diverse range of habitats ranging from the rift wall, ground water forest, acacia woodlands, open grasslands and the lake itself. It is the home of a diverse set of landscapes and wildlife. The park is close enough to Arusha to organize a day trip.

Visitors can do walking safaris as they watch animals and bird life.

The name Manyara is a Masai word emanyara, which is a euphorbia species of plant that is grown into a hedge around a family homestead.

There are two rainy seasons in Lake Manyara in a year. The long rains come between March and May and the short rains come from November to December. The warmest months are January and February.

Lake Manyara is famous for its large elephant population. It is also home to zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, waterbuck, baboons, & impala. Predators include lion, cheetah and leopard. The swamps are shared by flocks of birds; green woodhoopoes, lovebirds, tallish herons, white bellied go-away birds and giant kingfishers. On drier ground you will find the kori bustard & the heaviest of the non-flying birds; the ostrich.
